Death Cab For Cutie Wants To Go Home

Death Cab for Cutie albums are almost invariably about longing for something—usually a person. But on Codes and Keys—the first album in three years from Ben Gibbard, Chris Walla, and crew—the wistfulness seems to be directed at an abstraction: home. In fact, the word "home" appears in, oh, almost every song on the album and on my favorite track in particular, "Monday Morning," Ben spells it out when he sings, "I am a bird that is in need of grounding." Maybe this is because the band has spent so many years on tour at this point? Or the fact that he's newly married to the amazing Zooey Deschanel? Whatever it is, the album is great, if a little less anthemic than you expect from Death Cab.
