Anjaana Anjaani (Hindi, Anjānā Anjānī ?; English: Stranger, Stranger) is a Hindi Romantic film directed by Siddharth Anand, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Zayed Khan. The film is produced by Sajid Nadiadwala under his Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment Pvt. Ltd banner. The film's music has been composed by Vishal-Shekhar, who have composed the music for all of Siddharth's three films in the past. The cinematography is handled by Ravi K. Chandran. Anjaana Anjaani was scheduled to release on 24 September, then it was postponed to 1 October 2010.
Anjaana Anjaani is the story of Kiara (Priyanka Chopra), and Aakash (Ranbir Kapoor). Kiara is based in San Francisco, while Aakash is a New York City boy. Aakash has to clear a huge loan of $12 million, which he is unable to. Unable to find any means, suicide seems the only option to him. He decides to jump off the George Washington Bridge.
This is when he bumps into Kiara, who is also bound to commit suicide because she caught her fiance Kunal (Zayed Khan) cheating on her. They both try to put an end to their lives but are deterred by the coastguards. Still keen on ending their lives, Aakash deliberately gets hit by a car and Kiara falls off the bridge and breaks her neck.
This proves to be yet another failed attempt and they end up in hospital together. While recovering, both get to know each other. Continuing their attempts at suicide, they both try to kill themselves five times, by all means possible, but all in vain. They decide to end their lives on 31st of December 2009. With 20 days to go, they decide to fulfill their unfinished wishes and thus begins their journey. They both indulge in adventures like swimming in the middle of Atlantic Ocean, partying (trying to lose their virginities), etc. They venture out to Las Vegas on a holiday and end up together in bed
Realization dawns on both of them, that they love each other but Kiara realizes she still loves her ex-fiance, Kunal. On Aakash's insistence, Kiara moves back with her parents and gives Kunal a second chance, while Aakash moves in with his friend and colleague (Vishal Malhotra) and decides to go back to India on the night of 31st December and start afresh. He attends the bank settlement and makes up with his friends with whom he was at loggerheads. On the 31st, Kiara realizes that she is in love with Aakash.
Kunal realizes this and drops her to the airport to go to the same bridge where both Kiara and Aakash had decided to meet on the night of 31st of December to finally end their lives. Kiara reaches the bridge and doesn't find Aakash and thinks she will never see him again. Just then, Aakash arrives and proposes to her (in the ocean) and she accepts, then they kiss each other.
The film received mostly negative reviews. On the review-aggregation website ReviewGang, the film scored 4/10 based on 8 reviews. Anupama Chopra of NDTV rated it 2/5: "Anjaana Anjaani has a flatness that is unique. The screenplay goes nowhere fast. Here the emotions and characters are singularly plastic."Rajeev Masand of IBN rated it 1/5: "Anjaana Anjaani, unfortunately, is not only painfully predictable but also deathly boring". Sanjukta Sharma of Mint said, "This is a film of a few memorable moments. Overall, the script doesn’t hold up and no amount of external finesse can redeem it." A positive review came from Taran Adarsh from Bollywood Hungama, who gave the film 4 stars out of 5: "On the whole, Anjaana Anjaani is an unpretentious romantic saga that revels in the exuberance of newly found love. The film has everything going for it: top notch performances by two super-stars, good music, a sensitive director with a good track record, a simple yet absorbing story and of course, terrific moments (emotional as well as humorous). Don't miss this one".
