Corporate-sponsored jazz festivals come and go, but like a tiny mammal surviving dinosaur extinctions, the scrappy Vision Festival endures. Now in its sixteenth year, the Vision has grown into a packed week of performances by free-jazz heroes like David S. Ware, genre-hoppers like Marc Ribot, and international standouts like Tomasz Stanko. German avant-gardist Peter Brötzmann (pictured), a gentle soul who deploys his saxophone like a howitzer, is this year's honoree, and his June 8 set with Chicago firebreathers Ken Vandermark and Mars Williams promises some of the festival's most thrilling moments.
