Metropolis & mythology: Morfium Couture

Morfium is a noteworthy fashion label expressing its creative concept of progressive design through numerous visual arts and media like photography, theatre, movies and music sources. Morfium as the name of the brand also has a rich explanation starting from the mythological Morpheas, the messenger appearing in the dreams as well as a variety of inspirations taken from Balkan traditions.

The latest collection of Morfium Couture is named after and simultaneously inspired by "Metropolis", the science fiction masterpiece about urban dystopia. The movie was a truly futuristic indicator directed by German expressionist Fritz Lang in 1927. The ad campaign captured in the lens of talented photographer Dusan Jaukovic explores explicit and cutting edge designs rendering the movie convention in high fashion mode.

Swimming in glamour

Update: additional images from Colin Angus' swim shoot have now been added to the gallery. Including the likes of Michael Kors' leather-strapped one-piece, the shots are definitely worth a look. View them all after the jump.

There's swimwear for the water... and then there's swimwear for anywhere but.

Shooting for Modern Luxury magazine, Colin Angus brings us an indulgence of the latter; a vision of 2011's swimwear trends when they're so glamorous you can't possibly get them wet. This is your inspiration for sailing leisurely on the French Riviera, for partying pool-side in Saint-Tropez, for any of those occasions where a Ferragamo strappy bikini with matching strappy sandals is your number one swimwear option.

How to be alive

What makes you love a fashion shoot? Is it the model, the clothing, the way the clothes are styled, the photography? It could be any or all of the above, but sometimes a shoot is great for something else: sometimes it's the mood it evokes.

This is one of those shoots. Yes Dree Hemingway looks like a modern Daisy Buchanan; yes the styling by Bay Garnett is divine; and yes Tom Craig's photography work is far from shabby. But all those things come together to create a mood, and that mood is one that I'm not sure even has a name. It's carefree without being reckless, dreamy without being lazy; it's kicking off one's shoes and running through the sprinkler even when you're wearing a designer dress.

Oh wait - that's what it's called - it's called living. It's living not because of luxury but regardless of it. Tom Craig captures life, and that is what ultimately makes me want to pin these smiling, dreaming, sun-on-face and wind-in-hair photos up on a wall somewhere.

Acne's Cypress boots

If ever a bad word was said about a pair of ACNE boots, my ears were not present to bear witness. And such is their quality that I can easily believe on-one would find cause to quarrel with them; my own two pairs of Pistol boots shall be, I'm confident, faithful to the last.

I suppose it's a not-yet-documented rule of the curated wardrobe that if you find something that meets that golden trifecta - quality, comfort, and style - it's probably worthwhile investing in it. While I can't vouch for the comfort factor of ACNE's 'Cypress' boots as I've not yet owned any, the quality in person seems very much worthy of the spend. So too is the design, with it's buckle detail and classic rounded toe they've always struck me as sitting somewhere between tough-as-nails Western and elegant-aristocratic equestrian.

From boudoir to opium den

Last we admired Anais Pouliot she was the quintessential French beauty in Numero. This shoot for Vogue Russia could almost be an extension of that one, with similar poses, similar sensuality, similar use of nudity; except now Anais' character has entered a darker realm. From boudoir to some opulent opium den setting, the exotic silks and kimonos are a running oriental theme through many an editorial right now. Inspiration for mixing colours and prints, yes; but also for the painted red China doll lips and rosy blushing cheeks; a makeup looks that's a near mandatory match for the clothing.

The curated wardrobe & the impact on retailers

My piece on the concept of the curated wardrobe being the new luxury for the fashion forwards certainly got some people talking. Mass consumerism is, after all, the life blood of the fashion industry. Considered consumerism seems to run contrary to the fashion industry's needs and nature.

Thus in one of the conversations I've had via our Twitter (you find find Fashionising.com on Twitter at twitter.com/fashionising) about the article, the question of the curated wardrobe versus fashion retail was raised.

Treats magazine: a return to the golden age of print

"I read it for the articles."

Haven't we all really wanted to say that? The odds are that, with your tongue firmly planted in your cheek, you have. You've said it, and it was a throw away line. But haven't we all really wanted to say it and mean it?

Maybe not. Maybe it's just me and my nostalgia. For I've always been an avid reader of print media. Growing up I consumed it to an almost fanatical degree. First it was books, then, as I moved into my 20s, it was a mixture of books and magazines. The trouble was, the magazines seldom sat quite right with me. I'd heard of this Golden Age of Print. Of a time when print media made a real impact and earned real respect. But it was clear that the Golden Age was behind us, and still remains there. Go to your nearest newsstand and you'll see we're in an era of "now only $1" titles. What quality can we really expect for $1? Little. As a generalisation, most magazines now feel like a disposable product churned out to elecit cash from our pockets and give us no more then an hour's entertainment. Yet there was a time when it was different. A time when you really could pick up Playboy and say "I read it for the articles." A time when Playboy published and serialised works by Hemingway, Steinbeck and Fleming. A time when it, and other titles aimed at anyone but society's archaic definition of 'the housewife', provoked thought alongside pictures of Marylin Monroe.

A time past, and yet not quite. For while its golden age has long faded, while it never will return to dominance, there are those who seem determined to do print right. Who seem determined to feed everyone's refound love of print, to create titles that are of a certain quality, titles that create a point of difference. Collection magazine is one. treats! magazine another.

Finally, through Treats, I can say "I read it for the articles."

Me and 35mm

I'd certainly not consider myself a model, not by any stretch of the imagination. I know what a model is, and I'm not one of them. But one of the countless upsides to being the Editor of a publication like Fashionising.com is that you often get to wear different hats (yes, both literally and figuratively). You also get to meet, get to work with, get to know and love, some really great and talented people. When Lyndel Yeo and Daniel Jackson from 35mm photography asked if I'd do a shoot with them my thought bubble was of a few casual snaps in someone's backyard. But instead it turned out to be quite a luxurious affair at boutique Melbourne hotel The Blackman, with some amazing garments pulled together by the team from Melbourne Stylists. They pretty much had to prise the D&G silk slips and Stella McCartney shoes from my hands (and feet), so perfectly chosen was their bounty.

Perhaps it's the luxury of not being in front of the camera for a living, but working on these kind of projects with the amazing people we get to meet every day becomes kind of like the fun mucking around you'd do with a bunch of friends. Aside from the genuinely fun time I had lounging around in a hotel room in D&G, drinking wine and singing along (rather badly) to Feetwood Mac, it was also completely interesting - as shoots always are - watching the team at work. With constant pampering from hairstylist Sharah Fitzgerald and makeup artist Fiona Hughes the day went by quickly and without a dull moment. And, it must be said, Lyndel and Daniel make a fantastic team.
